Case Study: Carbon Footprint Reporting in the Retail Industry

ELKJØP, ELECTRONICS RETAILER, NORWAY

Customer Overview

Elkjøp (known as Elgiganten outside Norway) is the largest consumer electronics retailer in the Nordics, with 400 stores in six countries and 10,000 employees, owned by Dixons Carphone. To remain a leader in the competitive consumer electronics space, the business operates with ‘lean’ principles to provide the most customer-centric, affordable products in the market.

Challenge

The electronics industry has a significant carbon footprint, and Elkjøp acknowledges their responsibility by aiming to reduce emissions and energy consumption from its operations. Elkjøp was looking for a partner to help them achieve their future goal of zero emissions and to ensure that their energy portfolio delivers the best value, so they can continue to offer a range of electronics at competitive prices to their customers.

World Kinect Solution

World Kinect partnered with Elkjøp to manage their energy procurement and to centralize energy consumption, cost, and carbon reporting data in one platform – the World Kinect portal, exclusive to our customers.

Energy Data Analysis

Energy Data Analysis

World Kinect gathered, organized, and centralized Elkiøp energy consumption data, allowing us to calculate and report on the carbon footprint from Elkiøp’s multi-site operations.

Energy Efficiency Audit

Importantly, the data was broken down by store location, allowing to focus efficiency efforts on individual stores, providing more control and valuable insights to shape monthly energy efficiency action plans.

Energy Usage Reporting

World Kinect also supported Elkjøp with regulatory compliance, conducting regular energy audits, and providing the necessary data for mandatory carbon compliance reporting.

Energy Advisory

Energy Advisory

Our procurement teams advised Elkjøp on the most efficient energy contracts available and, through our fixed price hedging contracts, saved €460,000 in a 10-month period compared to the spot market.

Business Impacts

Elkjøp gained complete visibility of their carbon emissions, energy costs, and consumption across their store portfolio. One store saved almost €19,000 annually when the nightly base load was reduced, and the practice of running heating and cooling at the same time was rectified. Elkjøp continues to benefit from World Kinect’s ongoing energy procurement advisory and audits to minimize carbon footprint and drive efficiencies.
