Get the Facts on CORSIA

The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) is a set of  international regulations that mandate  carbon-neutral growth for the aviation industry.

About CORSIA

The aviation industry has committed to carbon-neutral growth post-2020. CORSIA is a market-based mechanism, which starts in January 2021. It is voluntary for countries to participate in the scheme during the pilot and first phase.

However, it is mandatory for airlines to offset their emissions from flights between states that are participating in the scheme starting in 2021. The scheme will be mandatory for all countries by 2027.

CORSIA is being instituted to achieve ICAO’s goal of “carbon-neutral growth” for the global airline industry from 2020 forward.

A Phased Approach

There are three phases to the program. Participation in the pilot phase and in the first phase is voluntary, whereas, all ICAO member countries must participate in the third phase of the scheme.

  • Pilot phase 2021-2023 (voluntary)
    • 88 countries have committed to the pilot phase. Get the full list of participating countries, here.
  • First phase 2024-2026 (voluntary)
  • Third phase 2027-2035; participation of all countries that are part of ICAO must participate unless exempt. Exemptions include:
    • Least Developed Countries (LDCs)
    • Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
    • Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs)

About Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

An aircraft operator’s offsetting requirements under CORSIA can be reduced using sustainable alternative fuels. For MRV purposes, the sustainable alternative fuel needs to have a default emission value for each feedstock/production pathway.
